NC Waterfalls -

On any given Tuesday, yes Tuesday, there are typically no fewer than 40 vehicles parked in the gravel lot at the Catawba Falls trailhead in the Pisgah National Forest.

And that’s year-round, said Grandfather District Ranger Nick Larson. On any given Saturday or Sunday in the summer, cars will be overrunning the otherwise serene forest site, even parking illegally on private property on Catawba River Road.

The beautiful waterfall has been becoming more beloved, but also more beleaguered, since the Forest Service acquired 88 acres of land from the Foothills Conservancy and opened it to the public in 2010.

With the added visitors – in the tens of thousands each year – come more injuries, and even more deaths, including one in 2018 and one in 2017.

Waterfall Safety Tips

  • Follow instructions posted at all waterfalls and trails.
  • Stay on developed trails, observation decks and platforms.
  • Do not jump off waterfalls or dive into pools.
  • Do not climb on rocks above waist height.
  • Do not swim or wade upstream near a waterfall.
  • Watch your footing. Dry rocks can be just as slippery as wet ones, especially those covered with algae.
  • The top of any waterfall is the most dangerous. Do not lean over a ledge at the top of a falls.
  • Watch children and pets at all times.
  • Make sure you are in a safe, solid location before taking pictures or selfies.
  • Never visit waterfalls or hike alone.
  • Bring your cell phone in case you need to call for assistance.

A family-owned and operated business, Hillman Beer is the mastermind of Brad, Greig, and Brandi Hillman. The trio works hard to supply a winning combination of comfort and quality. When you arrive, you’ll be struck by the chill, yet slightly quirky ambiance. Long communal tables encourage you and your cohorts to intermingle with other beer lovers. The brewery’s outside space is even more impressive, however; ample seating is available and the people (and dog) watching opportunities are exceptional. Order your favorite beer and enjoy a leisurely game of corn hole with your best buds.
